I wonder if part of this is that, prior to KH3, the last main game was on PS2, so using in-game models for offical art, etc. If people have reasons to hate on KH3, let'm hate on KH3 - everybody dislikes something about something. Maybe in-engine gameplay and such doesn't help the case for the older games/styles, with KH3 pushing way more polygons, and having such advanced lighting, etc., but in terms of the offical artwork, overal character silhouette/at-a-glance appearances, costuming, etc., KH1&2's eras had so much more of a unique an interesting style. I think the "graphics" looked really good, everything looks so three dimensional and nearing photorealism/realistic proportions, and if that's your goal, then it's ever closer to the finish line.īut from an art perspective, I think everybody saw a downgrade. ![]() I've never been a big fan of the KH3 designs. I think you're mixing two things that shouldn't be mixed (in this conversation). And while this change may be jarring for some people given that we've only seen the CGI version of these characters in very quick bursts during the opening and closing cutscenes, I personally feel like it'll be better for the series in the long run to rise to the modern standards of Disney & Pixar animation. ![]() This artsyle has always been around in the series. Luckily for Kingdom Hearts, prior to KH3, we've had CGI interpretations of these characters since the beginning for future games to base their models off of. Basically, I'd rather see KH adapt it's art style to match that of the Disney properties it will feature rather than the newer Disney properties to be downgraded to the PS2 style of the older games. One of the biggest advantages of this is comparing P ort Royal in KH2 in the Caribbean in KH3, which can achieve realism in a way the old engine never could. With that in mind, I'd personally rather not see PS2 imitations of these CGI Disney properties when today's technology can allow an even more accurate portrayal of how these characters actually appeared in their film. The aesthetic is a lot more toony and "plastic" than it is realistic. A comparison I like to point to is how the Street Fighter characters look in Wreck-It Ralph in comparison to how they are portrayed in their respective modern game engine. ![]() I get that people aren't use to seeing the characters this way, but that's just how human characters look in the CGI Disney style. Kingdom Hearts 3 is the first game to enter the modern age of Disney's newer CGI offerings & also the classic works of Pixar. Kingdom Hearts's aesthetics has always strived to recreate the look and feel of the many Disney properties that are featured in each game. And even compared to the old Luminous Engine model, I still think that KH3 doesn't look too far off from the look they were going for. And I still find it amazing that the Unreal Engine 4 allows Sora himself to go through many different art style changes in a single game. Especially after the many years of people begging for a Kingdom Hearts game to look like the CGI Opening & Closings for the entirety of the game ( something I think KH3 closely achieves when you look at them side by side). Personally, I still remain a strong proponent to the new art direction the series is going in with Unreal Engine 4.
